Alvis Vitrups “Circle Lines”

The exhibition of the artist Alvis Vitrups “Circle Lines” displays sculptural objects – large-format lathed wooden circles, known in the world as “wood turned wall art”.

The concept of the exhibition is based on two main motives – to show high-quality handicraft skills and discover the uniqueness of the material. The symbiosis of these two values is perfectly reflected in the artist’s works.

Alvis Vitrups is confident that the basis of each artwork should rest upon outstanding handicraft skills that are regretfully sometimes forgotten and not outlined in contemporary art, often even knowingly denying their necessity. Creating these works, the artist seeks to highlight the singularity of each tree, the beauty created by nature. In the process of creating a work, the study of each individual wooden blank gives an impetus to the next step that needs to be made. He believes that the artist’s task is to discover the most valuable in the material, to highlight it and not to lose or not destroy what created by nature.

In 2006, Alvis Vitrups graduated from the wooden design department of the Liepāja Applied Arts Secondary School. The artist participated in sculptural plain-airs in Liepāja, Pāvilosta and Jurkalne. In 2012, in Liepāja, his designed bench received the nomination “Master Craftsman” at the contest “Design Object – Park Bench”

The sculptor is the author of the “The Lighthouse” urban design object located on Schneider Square in Pāvilosta. Several of his sculptural works can be seen in one place in the hotel “Jūrnieku ligzda” in Pērkone.

The exhibition at the Gallery “Romas Dārzs” is open until September 7th .
