Sūniņš Žanis

Painter.

Zanis Sunins painted figurative compositions and landscapes, lyrical scenes from everyday life, as well as portraits. At the beginning of his creative work Zanis Sunins’s representation of figures was influenced by J. R. Tilberg, at the end of 1930’s he had developed a more freer and embossed way of applying color and a softer form of painting. Since the 1960’s in plein-air’s he painted realistic landscapes of Talsi neighborhood in watercolor and oil paint techniques. The artist has also worked in monumental painting genre.

Zanis Sunins graduated from the G. Elias’s Workshop of Figurative Painting at the Art Academy of Latvia with diploma work “Idyll” (“Family Idyll of an Artist”, 1931). Exhibited since 1925. Participated in exhibitions of artist group “Radigars” (1929-1935), participated in the Latvian Fine Arts Association (1936-1939) and in the association of artists “Rosme” (1939). Member of the Artists’ Union since 1945. During his study years in Riga, he worked as a set designer, made works in applied graphics, graphic arts and also in other art genres.
