Delle Biruta
Biruta Delle is an explicitly artistic person with a wide range of influences from the creative intelligence of her generation. She has always maintained an individual perspective in her art and life, and used her painting as a way to reveal the truth. Subjects, plots, encrypted content and subtext is very important in Delle’s works. In the figurative compositions the artist has tried to solve the philosophical questions, in portraits she has mainly focused on the representation of the creative personas, while in the landscapes she often used the city’s suburban motifs, in which the mood, the revelation is more important than a specific representation. All paintings of Delle reveal the inner contradictions, drama, even tragedy of her generation which often interferes with direct irony. Her painting is characterized by a convincing sense of color, in which she pays attention to the dense surface of the painting.
In the circle of interests of Biruta Delle there’s always the human being, however, while painting in the nature, she finds the tonal relationships, what can’t be done in the workshop. This professional mastery acquired by studies in the nature also proves itself in surreal paintings. The palette of Delle is rich and harmonized just like the nature, in it the Earth tones – from dark brown to russet orange as well as greenish greys and blues. While shadows and lights are taken from the unrealistic world, in which there is no air. [2,75] The world of characters created by the artist is inhabited by a space full of metaphysical peace – the form of characters, plasticity and conditionality shows the mastery of the artist. Surreal, parallel world are moved to reality and only then painted, so there is a combination of both worlds, if not contradictory, then at least different approaches that creates the suggestion of Dulle’s works. [2,72] Delle explains her attachment to the nature: “The nature is full of strength of life. But this is not a muscular force with which you can hit the table and make a sound. The nature doesn’t attack us with strong colors, it’s an intangible, nuanced charm, in which you can always see something new. And the search goes even deeper.”
Biruta Delle’s interest for art was thanks to teachers Auseklis Bauskenieks and Ansis Stunda from the Riga Second Secondary School. The artist has studied in the Art Academy of Latvia (1964-1967) – at this period of time Konrads Ubans was a very important professor here. Exhibited since 1967, has held solo exhibitions in Kuldiga, Jurmala, Riga, Mazirbe, Cesis, Tukums, Smiltene and many other places. She is a member of the Artists’ Union since 1975.
